Princess Amarosa — An Evening of Her Own

A charming little tale of royal duties, endless introductions, and a princess who desperately needed a break.

Once upon a time, in a beautiful kingdom surrounded by peaceful mountains and sparkling lakes, stood a magnificent castle. Its towering spires reached toward the heavens, its gardens were always blooming, and its grand halls were filled with music, laughter, and important visitors.

Within those lovely walls lived Princess Amarosa, the king's only daughter.

Amarosa was everything a princess was expected to be. She was beautiful, graceful, kindhearted, and blessed with a smile that could brighten even the dullest royal gathering.

Unfortunately, being a princess wasn't nearly as relaxing as the storybooks made it seem.

Her mornings began with servants preparing her clothes, brushing her long lavender hair, and reminding her of the day's appointments. By lunchtime, someone was usually asking her to change into another dress, attend another ceremony, or remember the name of some visiting nobleman.

And the evenings? Well, those were often the busiest of all!

You see, her father absolutely loved hosting parties.

There were celebrations for visiting dignitaries, banquets for old friends, receptions for distant relatives, and occasionally gatherings that seemed to have no particular reason at all.

And naturally, his beloved daughter was expected to attend every single one.

"Princess Amarosa, what a pleasure to meet you!"

"The pleasure is mine," she would reply with her sweetest smile.

"Your Highness, do you remember Lord Bartholomew?"

Not even slightly, she thought.

But outwardly, she remained perfectly charming.

"Oh, of course! How wonderful to see you again!"

Between the endless introductions, the compliments about her dresses, and the conversations about matters she couldn't possibly care less about, Amarosa sometimes wondered whether anyone would notice if she quietly disappeared.

Unfortunately, someone always did.

Her father, the king, was a cheerful gentleman who adored his daughter more than anything in the world.

He was especially proud of how wonderfully she represented the royal family.

"Ah, my dear Amarosa!" he would announce happily. "There's someone I simply must introduce you to!"

Those were the words she had come to fear most.

Another lord? Another wealthy merchant? Perhaps another young gentleman whose greatest accomplishment was owning twelve horses?

Amarosa loved her father dearly, but sometimes she wished he would find a different hobby.

As the evening continued, she glanced toward the tall windows overlooking the peaceful lake. Beyond the castle walls, the sky was turning a beautiful shade of violet.

Suddenly, a delightful thought crossed her mind.

What if, just for tonight, I took a little holiday from being a princess?

And so, when the guests became occupied with their conversations and her father was busy entertaining a visiting nobleman, Amarosa saw her opportunity.

She quietly slipped away from the reception hall.

Past the long corridor.

Past the enormous paintings of her ancestors.

And finally, through a little-used doorway leading toward the gardens.

She glanced over her shoulder.

Nobody was following her.

"Perfect!" she whispered, trying not to giggle.

For once, there were no servants reminding her of appointments, no guests waiting to shake her hand, and absolutely nobody asking whether she remembered Lord Bartholomew.

She made her way toward the lake, where a small wooden boat rested peacefully near the shore.

After settling into the boat, she slipped off her shoes, stretched her tired feet across the soft cushions, and leaned back with a contented sigh.

The gentle breeze played with her lavender hair. The stars twinkled above, and the distant castle lights shimmered across the still water.

For the first time all day, Princess Amarosa had absolutely nothing to do.

No schedules.

No formal greetings.

No royal obligations.

Just a beautiful evening, the gentle rocking of her little boat, and the wonderful pleasure of being completely alone.

She smiled to herself.

"Ahhh… Now this is what being a princess should feel like."

Then, after a moment's thought, she added:

"I do hope Father doesn't arrange a search party."

And with that, she closed her eyes and enjoyed her little escape.

After all, even a princess deserves an evening off.

The End.
